A few months ago a clip made the rounds showing a Challenger Hellcat squaring up with a Tesla Model S P85D. Spec-wise, the cars are pretty similarly matched for drag racing – the Challenger sports a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 cranking out 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor P85D generates 691 horsepower and 687 pound-feet of torque. However, in terms of drag racing behavior, there’s one crucial factor that separates the two – while the Tesla sends its power to all four wheels, the Challenger dishes out all that grunt to just the two rear wheels, making launches in the high horsepower coupe far more tricky.
That issue was demonstrated authoritatively when the pair hit the drag strip. While the P85D ran the 1320 as planned, with little drama and a time in the mid-11 second range, the Challenger driver dipped into the throttle with too much enthusiasm and not enough experience, causing him to spin the tires almost all the way down the track to an abysmal time far slower than the Tesla.
As we reported a few weeks ago, that Mopar driver has been practicing, and it looks like the pair finally got a chance to see how the cars match up.
It makes for a far more interesting race this time around, but with the Challenger now wearing drag radials, we have to wonder if what we’re looking at is really an even match at this point. Still, with the right driver behind the wheel, the Challenger should be capable of hitting the time generated here even on the standard Pirelli performance tires.
