While walking down the rows of cool musclecars at any car show, there are always components that we can see that draw us to the vehicle: cool wheels, chrome trim, fancy paint, a big engine. These are all parts of the car that get the most attention; but even though these areas are more noticeable, there are some components that are just as important yet rarely ever get seen.
Yeah, the old insulator was getting kind of raggedy, and lost its purpose.
It’s one thing to work on the outside of the car to make it look great, but working on the inside of the car matters too, and we ran across one area that was in dire need of some attention. We knew that Classic Industries has a complete line of classic vehicle trim and replacement parts, and a quick search online brought us to their site for the interior insulation that we needed.
We’re working on rewiring our project car with a Ron Francis Express Panel, and we noticed that our firewall and cowl panel insulators were quite raggedy. Our online search for firewall insulation brought us to Classic Industries, and we found the entire firewall/cowl panel kits were available for popular GM and Mopar classic vehicles.
These are simple cardboard panels that snap to the firewall with plastic retaining pins, and have a fiber insulator that helps keep the sound and heat from transferring into the interior. These are parts that you don’t try to find at a wrecking yard because you know they’ll either be water soaked or even worse off than your own.
All of the necessary perforations were right where they needed to be, and matched the originals.
Classic Industries is well-known for their extensive parts catalogs for classic GM and Mopar vehicles, and although they provide some of the nicest exterior and interior trim in the industry, their coverage for those hard-to-find parts is just as extensive. Even the plastic retainers are available and there’s no concern over the fit and finish of these parts. The best part is that the insulation was very affordable, it won’t break the bank to replace these panels.
We were able to get new retainers that were exactly like the originals.
When we pulled the old panels down, some were deteriorated, and others were gone altogether. We compared the old and new and the difference was night and day. The new insulator pads included all of the perforations that were on the originals, and they were a perfect fit for the interior.
When you’re restoring or customizing your vehicle, why do things half way? Just because your car or truck is over 40 years old, it doesn’t mean that small parts are no longer available; getting those parts brand new is far better than the repeated unsuccessful trips to the wrecking yard. We had no idea the left kick panel insulation extended to the top of the cowl panel, ours had disintegrated and all that was left was a small remnant of the original.
