If you’ve ever been fascinated by winged cars, you know the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird well. Recently, RK Motors Charlotte offered a ‘70 Superbird with only 29,756 original miles on it on eBay. While this Superbird is not a #1 car, like RK Motors is known for selling, the eBay lot offered a true piece of automotive nostalgia.
The Superbird was almost completely original, sporting a numbers-matching 440 Super Commando V8 engine, Torqueflite 3-speed transmission and all its original sheet metal. All of the factory components were maintained on the car, including the radiator, exhaust manifolds, air cleaner and horn.
The Superbird was repainted in its original Tor-Red color about five years ago, giving this Superbird a crisp, good-as-new look. The black vinyl top was also replaced using the correct material to accomplish the look of a factory top.
In the auction information, RK Motors admitted this car was not a factory first. However, they advertised the car as being a streetable car rather than a trailer queen. Although it was well maintained, the car is not in so pristine of a condition that the future owner would be afraid to take it out for a drive.
The eBay auction for this car ended in the afternoon of May 19th. While the car is rather impressive, it didn’t fair very well in the auction. Even after 19 bids, the last of which was $71,327, the reserve was not met.
Had someone wanted to avoid bidding and just buy the car, it would have cost them $109,900. Maybe we’ll see this Superbird go to a more generous bidder on eBay in the future.
