Aficionados of Mopar performance history will want to know about this car. Only the well-heeled may be able to do something about it, though. The rather ratty Dodge Daytona shown here is one of three such cars once used by Big Willie Robinson to form the ‘Brotherhood of Street Racers’ as a way to channel the energy of South Central L.A. youth away from crime and violence.
According to the seller, this is the only one left in existence. The car is all numbers matching, 440 V8 with a 727 Torqueflite transmission and a 4.10 Dana rear axle. The car has the original teardrop hood that was used on the King Daytona in the movie Two Lane Blacktop.
There is a long history behind this car and it is well documented. You will also get the original helmet his wife, Tomiko, used to race the Queen Daytona. The car was recently shown at The Forge Invitational in Chattanooga, TN, along with several monumental cars such as the Sox and Martin prostock cars.
Testament to the significance of this car is the fact that Supercar Collectibles have made a die cast version of this car now along with the others that Big Wille made famous.
On the current condition of the car, the seller says, “The car is just as it was when it was removed it from Big Willies back yard where it had sat since 1976. It is a controversy within itself as to whether to restore this car or leave it as it is. I guess that will be up to the buyer to make that call.”
With a price tag of $150,000, nobody’s going to be making that call too soon. The elements have not been particularly kind to the car over the past 35 years. The current auction ended in mid-May, but you can still contact the seller using the “Ask a question” link under Seller Info in the listing.
Despite the discouraging outward appearance, photos of the lower doors and other chassis sections seem to suggest that structural rot may be at a minimum. This is surely not a car that you’ll want to buy sight unseen. Failing that, an independent inspection would be very wise money spent.
