One of the hottest muscle cars to hit the Barrett-Jackson auction block this year in Scottsdale is our featured Pontiac, a ’69 GTO with 4,000 original miles. The car was never titled until this year, and was never sold by GM to the retail market. The Goat features a 400 mill with a three-speed auto, and since new it has remained on GM’s Certificate of Origin, or MSO.
This rare GTO is a fully-documented car by the Pontiac Historical Society, or PHS. It also includes General’s MSO, along with documented information from GM’s Heritage Center. This GTO, with VIN number 242379Z101043, is one of the lowest-mileage Goats from the era still in existence, this particular “Limelight” example was originally used by GM in a promotional film by the company announcing the return of the nameplate.
The limelight on black Goat was featured at Barrett-Jackson, lot number 1004. The car has sold with no reserve for a respectable $61,600 and though it’s not a fire-breather, the GTO is still nicely-optioned and has plenty of history behind it.
Also unique to this fascinating piece of Pontiac muscle history, the original center console is intact and the 400ci mill is a true “Ram Air” motor with a 4-barrel. The car also features a black vinyl top that adds to the late ’60s feel of the Goat, along with its redline tires.
The limelight paint is a color that you just don’t see everyday on GM performance cars, and with low miles and an ample amount of documentation this GTO has to be one of our favorites. Original GM muscle is becoming increasingly difficult to come by, but thanks to the likes of Barrett-Jackson rare pieces like this Goat are not completely lost!
