The 2015 edition of the Hot Rod Drag Week kicked off with a bang with Jeff Lutz busting off a 6.05 at 251 to set both ends of the new Unlimited record books on Day 1 at Gateway Motorsports Park. Upon leaving, Lutz ran into issues and had to withdraw from competition. Next in line was the Sick Seconds 2.0 Chevrolet Camaro, built and piloted by Tom Bailey.
Bailey fought power management issues on Day 1 but pulled enough power away from the twin-turbocharged Camaro to blast into the six-second zone on Day 2 at Lucas Oil Raceway with a 6.31, to take the lead in Unlimited competition. After solid passes at Great Lakes Dragaway and Cordova Dragway, Bailey holds a tenth-and-a-half second lead over Bryant Goldstone for the overall title.
Bailey and his Steve Morris Racing Engines powerplant, packing a twin-turbocharged punch, have taken over Unlimited since Lutz was forced to drop off the grid. The Sick Seconds 2.0 Camaro looks to be on the right track to finish out Drag Week strong as the rolling tour of horsepower and reliability heads back to Madison, Ill. for the final day of competition and then the all-out, heads-up Shootouts on Saturday.
While Bailey hasn’t come near the five-second zone that his car is likely capable of, it has successfully completed the rigorous challenge of hundreds of miles of driving, and that in itself is a monumental accomplishment for a brand new car that’s never been tested to this extent. Now, with the final day upon us, Bailey is merely a drive from his hotel to the staging beams at Gateway from officially completing Drag Week. And if he can keep up his present pace, he’ll take the overall crown for the second time.
Bailey and the rest of the remaining Drag Week competitors take to the track around 2:30pm central time to conclude Day 5 of the prestigious traveling tour of gearheads across the globe.
