When it comes to unique, rare, and sought after Mustangs – the 2000 SVT Cobra R is one of those cars that’s almost guaranteed to be on every Mustang enthusiasts dream car list, and for good reason.
We’re talking about a street legal, road racing inspired car that had a limited production run of just 300 models produced almost two decades ago. And with its factory independent rear suspension, a naturally-aspirated 385 horsepower 5.4 liter DOHC V8, and a Tremec T-56 6-speed manual transmission – the car is definitely a win, even by todays standards.
Our recent venture to Bring A Trailer’s website brought us to this modified ’00 SVT Cobra R which is currently for sale. This particular example is chassis number 85 out of the above mentioned 300 models produced. The original 5.4 liter V8 power-plant has been modified and now produces over 700 horsepower at the rear wheels thanks to a new custom-fabricated turbo kit with a Turbonetics turbo built by Stage 6 Motorsports.
While 700 horsepower sounds appealing to many of us, we can’t help but wonder if the turbo kit and the additional upgrades have compromised this Cobra Rs integrity in any way.
This Cobra R hosts a fair amount of upgraded components - such as aftermarket caster and camber plates, Nitto drag radials, supporting fuel components for the custom-fabricated turbo kit, and a tubular K-member.
However, this Cobra R only has a total of 15,000 miles on its odometer. With the exceptation of the custom-made turbo kit and the fuel system, the modifications performed on this ultra-rare SVT Cobra R are rather mild. In retrospect, components like the caster/camber plates and the tubular K-member could be removed at any time if the new owner chooses to.
At the end of the day, it’s a 700 rear-wheel horsepower turbocharged V8 Mustang with a 6-speed manual transmission and an awesome history behind it. With that said, can you really complain about it? Let us know your thoughts.
