Sometimes we find the greatest things out there in forum threads, and this one over at dodgecharger.com is a great one for movie fans that love Chargers. In it, forum user “bandit2012” told the tale of acquiring several of the wrecked ’69 Chargers and Challengers from the Quentin Tarintino movie “Death Proof.” He claims to have worked in the movie industry, and we see nothing there that disputes that at all. He ended up with five different cars from the film, three of which were mangled up Chargers.
The Charger at the top of this post was “Stunt Charger B” and was the car that was rearended by the white Challenger while parked out in a field during the movie. The roll cage in the trunk area had been specially prepped to fail to allow the rear of the car to fold down easier.
This particular car proved to be fairly indestructible and was used in roughly 60% of the chase sequences in the move. It also had a CNC brake system installed so that stunt driver Joe Hooker could more easily swing the tail of the Charger at will.
Stunt Charger B has since been restored and was spared from re-entering stunt car service in another movie, “Drive Angry,” that also features a flat black Charger with 10-spoke General Lee turbine wheels!
Bandit2012 reported that several remaining “Deathproof” cars were rebuilt by his company and sent over to “Drive Angry” duty. We don’t have confirmation of their eventual fate, but we’re guessing it wasn’t a happy one.
