Abandoned Projects: Two Dirty Rivieras For Under Seven Grand

00707_jrf9ucmtlzD_600x450We bumped into this pair of 1963 Buick Rivieras on Craigslist, and we’re scratching our heads a bit about the backstory. According to the seller, the first of the two cars was mid-project when they threw in the towel. They state that the build was being done for an online magazine, but other things started getting in the way and the Riviera got kicked to the curb. All we know is that if the project was for our magazine, the car would have been finished and then some…

00d0d_kVpJYVvJaI9_600x450The seller goes on to say that the first car has a ‘good’ motor, but shoddy brakes and a dilapidated interior. The second, donor car was found and introduced to the build, since it had most of the things that the original needed.

Rather comically, the seller has 9,999,999,999,999 as the odometer reading. When looking at the exterior of the cars (if you can manage to look past the body rot), things don’t look too terrible – some patch work here and there, plus a fresh coat of paint, and you’d have yourself a half-way decent looking cruiser.

One glance inside the car, on the other hand, and any hope for a simple clean-up job is blown out of the water. The interior looks a little closer to the one-quadrillion mile mark that the seller suggests. No doubt, all of the upholstery from both cars would need to be ripped out and replaced, and the dashes and consoles look iffy at best.

00u0u_4Ltysb1oJvF_600x450Rivieras are no doubt handsome cars when fully restored. The car was somewhat of a personal project for boisterous designer Bill Mitchell (the same responsible for this vibrant 1980 Stingray). The car even made it as Motor Trend’s 1963 Car of the Year.

But for just shy of seven grand, this pair might be priced too steep. It’s likely fair to say that these Rivieras are in poor condition, in need of who knows how many thousand dollars of work, and are asking for $6,900. But on the flip side, a pair of the same two cars in good condition will bring in only around $15-20,000. So you can’t expect to reap too great a profit from these restorations.

But then again, perhaps money isn’t the name of the game; Rivieras make some fantastic-looking cars. Of course, there is always some potential to make a wicked street machine or autocross hero. But what do you think – are these Buicks worth the Bucks? Or would you pass? Let us know in the comments below. MPA Buick Riviera 1963.jpg
