To be read in “the movie trailer guy’s” voice: In a world where restomods and modern engine swaps rule the car show circuit, one man stands alone in his quest for old school cool. When his peers convert to fuel injection and late model powertrains and suspension, he maintains the look and feel that started the street machine craze back in the 1960s. Coming this month to an eBay ad near you, it’s a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T with painted flames, a tunnel ram intake, and Centerline wheels.
Did you try to read it in the late great Don LaFontaine’s voice (aka the movie trailer guy)? That’s about the only true way to describe this total throwback from an era gone by, because at first glance this car actually brings you back to a generation of hot rodders who thought it cool to paint symmetrical flames on the hood and fenders, and to bolt on one of the coolest wheels from that time: Centerline wheels.
Back then, we didn’t have to worry about air flow through a set of five-spoke wheels to cool off the brake rotors – because most cars didn’t have them, they had drum brakes all the way around. Under the hood (and sticking through it) is a tunnel ram intake with dual quads (hat’s two four-barrel carburetors to you millennials).
The story on this 83,000-mil Charger R/T is that it was purchased from the 85-year-old original owner, who sent the car back to the Chrysler factory in the 1980s to have some work done to the car. That work included power windows, power steering and brakes, roll bars and black leather interior, all factory installed according to the seller. And the exhaust? What else: Cherry bombs!
The pearl white paint has period-correct blue metallic flames, and if the owner of this hot rodded musclecar gets what he wants, that Buy-It-Now price of $50k will put this car into the garage of its third owner. And the old school “spin out” phrase is used, too – it apparently has a line lock device to help paint some elevens on the pavement. It’s been sitting in a garage for six years, which seems a shame.
But is this old school throwback worth the money he’s asking? You tell us what you think, about the car… and about the price. Would you change anything about it if you bought it?
