Street Feature: Darryl Koenen’s Orange Pearl ’72 Duster

1200-17The first thing that will catch your eye about this ’72 Plymouth Duster is the incredible paint that it’s wearing. It is a PPG orange pearl that color shifts to a light green in the right lighting. The paint also features some impressive ghosted decal work done by the owner, Darryl Koenen of Port Orchard, Washington.

Beyond just looking good, this Duster has an impressive build sheet on it that would make any lover of street muscle drool. It features a 408 cubic-inch Stroker motor, 727 automatic transmission, and Chrysler 8-¾-inch Suregrip rearend with 3.91:1 gearing.

The fuel system is made up of a Holley 750cfm carburetor mounted on an Edelbrock air-gap intake, while the ignition system is powered by MSD. This build also features an impressive custom interior with a Flaming River steering wheel, Auto Meter gauges, a B&M shifter, and Italian racing seats with custom embroidered logos on the headrests.

Darryl did all of the work himself and started this project after being left disappointed by a new musclecar. “I was excited when the new Camaro came out,” Darryl explained. “But I was disappointed with the horsepower and how it drove. I wanted something with good horsepower – something with old horsepower.” To that end, Darryl bought this 1972 Duster and did the tear down restoration.

Along with the stunning orange pearl paint, Darryl also used a flame and heat resistant nano-paint under the hood to help keep the rest of the paint safe from any heat — that’s the gray color in the engine compartment. He also added Wilwood disc brakes all around and mounted Centerline die-cut wheels with Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires under the car. New cars are great, but you can’t beat the feel of a classic musclecar with some pony power.
