The four door cars have always been less desirable, making them more affordable for the entry level enthusiasts, but is anything really wrong with them? This Chevy four door has driven away with plenty of awards that it can use as ammunition in an argument against that stigma, and after looking at it, is it really hard to see why?
Tom Jaff of Gig Harbor, Washington, has had this car for thirty years and restored it to this condition only a few years after buying it. He did all the work himself and managed to pull off a beautiful and timeless restoration in a time where people we doing some interesting things with their cars. All of the stainless is original to this car and was in great shape when he got it, and the car was rust free, so it was a great start to the project.
The build features a 454 cubic-inch big-block engine that is capable of 475 horsepower. “It runs like it too,” Tom told us. “It really goes.” The engine has been enhanced with a big cam and is fueled by dual 4-barrel 600cfm Edelbrock carburetors. It also has a turbo 400 transmission and a 3.08:1 geared positraction rear end. Tom has also improved airflow with a set of headers and improved steering control with a power steering system he rigged up himself.
This car has been driven coast to coat and he Tom has put over 100,000 miles on it. This restoration was built to drive and he uses it for just that. Everywhere he goes it gets comments and looks, after all, it isn’t often you see a four door restored with such care – and customized the way he has done with this car. The door handles have been shaved off and the doors and windows are all electric. “It drives like a dream on the stock suspension,” Tom told us. “The only thing I’ve done is add a front and rear sway bars.”
The unusual paint is one thing that gets a lot of attention. It is a dark green that reflects almost black at the right angles. It also features stunning ghosted flames that nearly blend in with the main body color. “The paint color is a secret,” Tom told us. “We’ll just call it black forest pearl.” It took him a lot of work to get his hands on the mixture, and he isn’t willing to just hand it out.
After three decades he is still driving and loving his car. With an upgraded stereo and custom interior, it is not just a fun driver, it’s a comfortable driver. The effort he put into the project is clear and we are glad to see a four door get a little love.
