Patrick McAuliffe is the owner of Those Guys Rod and Customs out of Bremerton, Washington, and they build all manners of hot rod and 4×4 vehicles in their shop. “Usually we are about half hot rod and half 4×4,” Patrick told us. “But right now it seems the balance is tipped towards cars.”
Being the owner of a shop that builds award winning autos in both show and race categories, he has to drive something cool — and he most certainly does. Patrick’s daily driver is a simple 1960 Chevrolet impala. It was originally a small-block car with a three-on-the-tree transmission, but at one point in its life it was upgraded to a tri-power 348 cubic-inch big-block engine and a four-on-the-floor transmission. The engine and carburetors being dated between about 1960 and 1962, it’s all correct equipment for what could have come in an original big-block Impala.
Not your typical hot rod, it has a classic and unrestored feel to it as well. While it has been recently bagged and now features fully controllable Air Ride Technologies suspension, it has seen little change since Patrick bought it about six months ago.
The other unique thing about this hot rod is the patina look that it has. It’s not the usual patina void of rust with the paint flaking or fading away, instead it features the rusting rear quarters and trunk lid as a way of standing out. It has the most accurate northwest barn find look we’ve ever seen. It rains a lot out here, of course there is going to be rust.
“We are going to repaint the top and use a white with a ton of metal flake,” Patrick explained. “Then we are going to clear over the rest of the body.” The look that we create is going to be a really cool blend of a fresh, beautifully painted white on the top mixed with the old and unrestored look on the rest of the body. We can’t wait to see how it turns out.
