Although this Model A Ford is driven by Ann Sears, it was built for her by her husband, Fred Sears. The couple from Bremerton, Washington, has had the car for eleven years and it has been on the road for the last six. “We travel with it quite a bit,” Fred told us. “In six years we’ve put 39,000 miles on it.” They’ve even had it out driving in four inches of snow!
The unusual power plant in this Model A is really what caught our attention. The engine is from 1996 and it’s a 3.8 liter Buick V6 with a blower. The ’96 Buick that it came out of was of course front wheel drive, so in order to get the rear wheel drive system of the Model A build to work with the new motor, the engine and transmission had to be rotated 90 degrees in the car. The transmission is a 700-R4 and the drivetrain is completed with a 10-bolt rearend.
The entire body of the car is steel, you won’t find any fiberglass on this build, but Fred replaced it with all new steel when he built the car. When he started the project, he sandblasted, boxed, and refinished the frame. He also added front disc brakes, ladder bar rear suspension, and retrofitted the air conditioner from the Buick under the cowl of the Model A body.
The picture on the left is what the car looked like when they brought it home, the other three images are progress through the project.
While he did keep the Model A steering wheel, he put in all new gauges. The car is technically unfinished, and displays only a brown primer color on the exterior. While we thought that was an intentional look, Fred revealed that he had actually intended to paint it, but everyone just told him to leave it, including his daughter, whom he says will end up with the car someday.
