Herb Dennis of Bremerton, Washington, is one of the lucky few that gets to drive a cool car every day — or is it a truck? That is one of the great debates that surround the Rancheros and El Caminos that has often lead to confusion at car shows. While it is a bother to some people, from our casual conversation with Herb we get the feeling that he isn’t as concerned either way. Instead, he is merely happy to drive his 1969 Ford Ranchero.
“It’s a driver, not a fancy show car,” Herb told us. He bought it a few years ago out of Idaho and brought it home to drive. It gets about 400 horsepower and Dennis explained that he is “not embarrassed to drive it.”
The engine is a relatively simple 351 cubic-inch Windsor with a four-barrel 600cfm Holley carburetor, roller rockers and an Edelbrock camshaft and Edelbrock intake. The transmission is a four-speed manual and the drivetrain is finished out by a 3.25:1 positraction rearend.
It wasn’t so odd to see a vehicle like this in the 1970s sitting in traffic, but today it stands out gets attention, and that’s why it caught ours. We love seeing classics like this that serve daily duties, whether you drive it ten minutes or an hour, it’s all good.
