This 1955 Chevy came to Don Brown of Oregon City, Oregon, with two things: a complete, frame-off restoration and a story. It is a combination of the story, the beautiful restoration, and a healthy love of the 1955 Chevrolet that make Don sure that this ’55 Chevy is a keeper
The car was built by Randy Kolch who finished the car several years ago and shortly thereafter suffered from multiple strokes that left him unable to drive his dream car. Don and his wife Allison bought the car in 2015. “I really feel that I was meant to be the caretaker since Randy was unable to care for and enjoy his dream car,” Don explained.
The entire drivetrain has been upgraded with a tuned-port injected 305 cubic-inch motor, 700-R4 transmission, and rearend with 3.42:1 gears out of a 1985 Camaro. The engine is nicely dressed with a polished intake and ceramic coated headers, but has also seen performance upgrades such as MSD electronic ignition, dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers, and drop spindles with front disc brakes.
The interior is redone in the original style the same way the exterior has. The only difference in the exterior paint is the subtle addition of a fine, silver metal flake to the turquoise. It’s a really good looking car that proves Randy had done an impressive and thorough restoration.
Don’s favorite thing about the car is just driving it. “It’s just a great pleasure to drive, it’s comfortable, it handles great, and goes down the road like you’re floating on a cloud, just very smooth,” Don explained. “I’ll drive it just to drive it for no particular reason.” The only time he doesn’t like to take it out is in the rain, but sometimes in Oregon, even during the summer, that can catch you off guard. “It has never been trailered,” Don continued.
Here is part of what makes this car so special. Family is important to all of us, so when all four of Don’s grand-kids have told him that this is the best hot rod that he has ever had, that really makes it all worth it. As someone that has owned many hot rods, Don is certain that not only is this his favorite, but it is definitely a keeper. That is why he named this car “Keeper.”
