Enthusiasts of niche cars tend to stick together in groups with their own kind, be them owners of classic Mopars, Oldsmobiles, and even AMC’s. Buick-ophiles tend to be the same way, that’s why there have been events like the GS Nationals catering to the GN and GS crowd for over the last 30 years. The Nats are held every year at Bowling Green, Kentucky’s Beech Bend Raceway, where owners of the Tri-Shield badged cars can run against each other in the quarter mile, or glisten under the sun for the judged show and shine all weekend long.
Unfortunately, the fun was cut a bit short early on Sunday morning when a total of five Buick Grand National race cars are said to have been stolen, along with their truck and trailer rigs out of area hotel parking lots. Yes, really. Clearly the work of a group of professionals, no one had seen this coming, as there has never been anything like this before at this particular show.
However, we had heard of something like this two years ago when a similar amount of Hurst/Olds Cutlasses were swiped during one of their respective shows. Whether or not these are the same group of thieves is beyond our knowledge at this time, although we wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case.
As it stands right now, the Turbo Buick forums are blowing up big time with leads, questions, photos, and contact info for the stolen car’s respective owners.
The one car in particular that has been getting the most attention is the 8-second Buick owned by Billy T., as like the other four fellows in the same situation, his entire rig was stolen, which includes his trailer and a black ’97 Ford F-250 truck (see attached photos).
There have been rumored sightings as recent as Monday afternoon everywhere from Texas to Northwest Ohio, but no solid leads or evidence.
Obviously, a Buick Grand National being hauled on a trailer isn’t anything new, and the supposed sightings could just as easily have been other GS Nats attendees returning home from the event. But it’s probably a pretty good idea to grab the tag numbers off of the vehicles and contact your local authorities, just in case anyway.
Speaking of which, Billy T. has been kind enough to supply everyone with his tag numbers off of his rig, and they are as follows; YJ524F (truck) ZW749F (car) T40BZ (trailer). All of which are registered with New Jersey plates. The missing Buick can further be identified with Billy’s race number (2953), along with his name stuck to the window (“Billy T.”). Also expect it to be shod with a set of Billet Specialties Comp 5 rollers on it. You can contact Billy T. directly at gnxtc2@aol.com.
As it stands right now, only Billy has made his specific information public, we hope the other will quickly follow suit, and we will keep our readers updated on further developments take place. We wish all of the owners of the stolen Buicks good luck in finding their lost rigs, and we hope all of you, our readers, will report anything you see regarding this matter to your local authorities as well.
