With St. Patrick’s Day in full swing with green rivers and green-themed celebrations, Ford has announced an all-new “Need for Green” hue that will be made available this summer across the 2019 Mustang lineup.
Bright, bold, and hard to miss, Need for Green serves as both a compliment and contrast the classic Dark Highland Green exterior paint seen on the special edition Bullitt Mustang.
Both colors are part of the the personalization offerings made available to enthusiasts for the 2019 model year in an effort to highlight self-expression.
“This is a color Mustang fans will celebrate because of its confident and youthful attitude,” said Barbara Whalen, Ford color and materials manager. “Need for Green is vibrant and jumps out at you, giving Mustang owners a look that definitely stands out in a crowd.”
In contrast, the Bullitt Mustang is “under the radar” as it comes debadged in dark green or an optional black.
“It’s that understated look that I think people will really appreciate,” said Mustang Brand Manager Mark Schaller. “The subtle hints, with chrome highlights around the window and the chrome accents around the grill, all hint back to the original Bullitt movie car. This particular car comes with upgraded performance and it will have more horsepower, manual transmission, and chassis upgrades including the MagneRide damping system.”
Schaller added that the 2018 model year serves as a huge leap forward for the Mustang. “It delivers everything you could ever want” he said. “The sound has been redone in this car and it has an active system that lets enthusiasts choose from four different volume notes.”
Other highlights include features that allow enthusiasts to drag race, drift, and burn more rubber. “Globally, it’s easy to develop the Mustang because of what it has come to be known for, its DNA” Schaller said. “It’s fast, fun, and affordable which transcends age, race, and gender as well as countries. There is a little bit of a rebel in a lot of our Mustang owners and they want a lot of those features that have an edge to them.”
The ongoing challenge Schaller says he faces with the Mustang development team is how to continuously modernize the platform and push the mustang forward while staying true to its core, without it becoming a retro car.
“It’s nerve-racking because we have such a passionate owner base,” Schaller said. “So there is always that thing in the back of your mind that’s saying ‘don’t screw it up,’ so we work really hard to do right by the consumer.”
While “Need for Green” made its debut today, Bullitt was first shown earlier this year with the rights to VIN 001 auctioned during the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction earning $300,000 that benefited the Boys Republic charity.
What’s next for Mustang fans? Schaller said the next GT500 will be revealed in 2019 and will have over 700 horsepower – which will make that car the most powerful production car Ford has ever made.
