PRI 2011: Bilstein Unveils New Drag Shocks, Universal Rally Struts

The biggest things we focused on with these new Drag shocks was drivability and the launching movement and its effect on planting the tires on the dragstrip.

Sure, the racing world is the primary market for a show that carries the name Performance Racing Industry, but the high performance street segment is a huge part of this happening in sunny Orlando as manufacturers reach out not only the hardcore racers, but those more casual car guys and gals who drive their cars to and from work and to the racetrack on the weekends.

Bilstein, one of the industry’s foremost manufacturers of suspension components for performance street and strip vehicles, is further tapping into what they call the grass roots segment of the street car market by bridging the gap between legitimate drag racing shocks and street car shocks with the launch of their new Drag line of shocks – one for the ever-popular Fox body Mustang, and the other for the F-body Chevy Camaro.

These stock-mount shocks are a complete bolt-on install, and taking cues from their success with their high-end racing shocks, dialed in the valving settings through a number of development and testing procedures to create a perfect street/strip performance aftermarket shock.

“The biggest things we focused on with these new Drag shocks was drivability and the launching movement and its effect on planting the tires on the dragstrip, explained Bilstein’s Pat Macaulay.

Shifting to other genres of motorsport, Bilstein has also turned their attention to the world of rally racing, oval track, and road racing applications with the unveiling of their new 36mm and 46mm universal Motorsports Struts, featuring inverted tube technology to provide race car builders a vast array of travel lengths and valving options. Each strut has a matched external housing that allows the builder to fabricate weld tabs for mounting the unit to a vehicles lower steering knuckle. As well, the supplied blank upper-stem can be custom machined down to fit a specific top mount or camber/caster plate.
