Throwback Thursday: This ’66 Nova Carries On a Family History

Can you believe that another week has come and gone. It’s true what they say, “time flies when you’re having fun.” Now that Thursday has hit us straight in the face and the end of the week is announcing its arrival, it’s time for another Throwback Thursday.

Typically, I use this column to present you guys an interesting tech article that was published some time ago, and can help you with work on your car. This week, I decided to take a look at a really cool feature car with a great story. Let’s step back to December 2018, to check out, This Chevy Nova Is More Than Good Looks, It’s A Limited Addiction.

66 Nova

Even when the body is in decent shape, it still takes a lot of effort to get a finished product that looks as good as this car.

Our original article started when Chuck Church Jr. was but a lad in the early-’80s. That’s when his father bought a ’67 Chevy Nova for the two of them to work on together. This was a profoundly meaningful coming-of-age adventure and bonding project for the two. Chuck Sr. clearly wanted to instill values in his son, such as the pride of working with your hands, craftsmanship, work ethic, and a love for muscle cars.

The ’66 Nova we featured in the original article is actually one that Chuck Jr. bought for him and his son to rebuild. The hunt took some time, but Chuck eventually found a Nova, and was surprised how many questions the seller asked about his intentions for the car. “I told him, when I was 11 years old, my father bought me a ‘67 Nova and we put the car together, and, that I still have it today – 36 years later,” Chuck Jr. said. “I told him my oldest son – who was 11 years old at the time, had expressed that he wanted a Nova like mine.” The seller excused himself from the conversation. After a poignant silence on the phone, he told Chuck that he and his father were doing a father/son build of their own when his father sadly passed away before they could finish.

Young Mathew was definitely hands-on with the rebuild.

The Church boys enjoyed the car as it was for the first five years they owned it, and enjoyed planning the exciting six-month-build storm that was to come. The build plan was epic, and the family even started making big plans for when this baby was completed: a big reveal at 2018 SEMA, Hot Rod Power Tour, Goodguys in Columbus, and the Super Chevy Challenge.

There’s a lot more to the incredible story of this ’66 Nova, and that definitely makes it worthy of a second look. For that reason, I selected, This Chevy Nova Is More Than Good Looks, It’s A Limited Addiction as this week’s Throwback Thursday showcase article.
