125 mph in a Corvette may not be extreme to anyone who has ever driven one made past 1997, but this guy decided to do it on an open road, not a track, and that’s never a great idea. The poor decision to drive the Corvette to extreme speeds ultimately ended up in a crash that has our jaws on the floor — look at that car!
A 21-year-old named Jiefu Gong is responsible for absolutely destroying the 2016 Corvette. He was driving 125 mph only 5 seconds before the crash on a two-lane road in Michigan. At the time of impact, he was traveling at 93 miles per hour.
Of course, the driver didn’t volunteer this information, he insisted he was only going about 10-15 mph over the speed limit. The posted speed limit for the road is only 35 mph, so his claims were that all this damage occurred during a 45-55 mph accident, not likely! After seeing the total carnage from the wreck, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office turned to the car’s event data recorder for the truth.
The police even managed to find a video they believe to be Gong going over 100 mph in the car, on the same stretch of road, that was posted on July 2016, seen here:
The driver and his passenger were left with several broken bones, but it’s amazing that they’re even alive to talk about it. Gong was charged with one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment of bodily function and could face up to five years in prison and/or a fine up to $5,000.
