In this photo gallery you will see the process of the students helping build the Teacher’s Pet power plant – a stroked LS3. This stroker 416 was built with sports forged 4340 Scat crank and rods, JE Pistons, COMP Cams valve train, Del West Titanium valves, Wegner CNC ported LS3 heads, Edelbrock Super Victor intake, Edelbrock 2 piece timing cover, MSD coils, MSD starter, MSD plug wires, FAST XFI Fuel injection, Custom West Bend Dyno valve covers, and a Wegner Pro touring front accessory drive.
The MSD plug wires, Aeromotive fuel lines and all engine bay wiring will be safely covered with hi-temp heat sleeving by Cool It Thermo Tec. Premium engine lubrication to be provided by Red Line synthetic oil.
Since this project was in its infancy stages Wegner Motorsports has been a wonderful partner to have on board. When they invited the West Bend high School automotive students over to their shop to assist in the build of this stout LS3 we couldn’t say “Yes” fast enough! So we planned on Friday Jan 29th to have the students take an hour and a half long bumpy bus trip to the small town of Markesan, WI. If you have never heard of the town then that’s ok because neither did our bus driver or my GPS.
When we arrived at Wegner we were invited in and we took a quick tour to understand what amazing things they produce there. After we took the tour we were put right to work. The block was already prepped and powder coated a cool West Bend Spartan Blue. Since there was so much work to be done in such a small time we decided to divide and concur with the students. So half when off to assemble the CNC ported LS3 heads with great valve train items from COMP Cams.
While that was going on the other half was measuring and prepping for the Scat crank to be set in the block. We then moved into showing the students how to measure and grind piston rings to allow for the correct ring gap on the JE pistons. As the morning came to an end we had an almost completed short block. The students took a short lunch to try and soak in all the engine assembly tips and tricks they learned from the masters at Wegner.
After lunch we moved into installing the JE pistons and the COMP Cam and hydraulic lifters. One really cool thing to watch was to see how to degree a cam correctly and how much of a difference that can make in a performance motor. I know this was one of the many things the students have never done before that day. With the day coming to an end we had to move quickly to get the hydraulic lifters, push rods, and cylinder heads on and torqued to spec. We took a quick moment to have the students, teacher, West Bend Dyno, and Wegner Motorsports guys sign the valley cover it was a cool personalization touch to add to the engine.
Before we left, we buttoned up the engine by adding the awesome billet West Bend Dyno valve covers Wegner produces and took a couple of great group pictures.
I know this was a day that the students are going to remember for a very long time. The amount of information that they took in from the engine builders was truly a once in a life time experience. All of us at West Bend High School Automotive are extremely grateful for this experience and we would like to thank all of the companies that have helped with this amazing car build.
We are proud to announce that we will be displaying and working on the vehicle at the World of Wheels Show in Milwaukee, WI on February 19th-21st. So if you live in the area stop in and come see the car and come talk to the kids about all the hard work they are putting into the build.
Check back soon because next update we will be installing the Teacher’s Pet suspension (front and rear), engine, wiring, interior, and much, much more! In the meantime, be sure to like their Facebook page for even more info on the project!
