No, you still can’t buy one off the showroom floor yet, but when General Motors officially sets the pricing, you know the Z28 is finally really official.
Of course, the pricing is also nearly four times higher than the 22 grand MSRP of the 2002 model–the last time Chevrolet produced a Z28 Camaro. At $75,000 the price is definitely breathtaking–but so is the car.
The Z28 designation was born with the 1967 model with the purpose of racing in Trans Am events, and Chevrolet says the new Z28 closely adheres to that heritage. The engine is a hand-assembled LS7 putting out 505 horsepower and 481 lb/ft of torque with a redline of 7,000 rpm. That’s enough power to make it the most powerful normally aspirated regular production block V8 ever. The internals sound like impressive stuff as well. The intake valves and connecting rods are constructed from ultra light weight titanium, and the dry-sump oiling system utilized is ideal for maintianing proper oil pressure event under high-G loads.
With all that power on tap, GM will only sell the Z28 with a six-speed manual gearbox. And the tires are bulldozer wide Pirelli PZero 3/5/30ZR19’s. Sticking with the road racing mission, Chevrolet’s engineers spec’ed out Brembo carbon Ceramic brake rotors with an incredible 394 millimeter diameter and four-piston carbon calipers. Chevrolet says that the setup saves 22 pounds off of similarly sized steel rotors and calipers. The Z28 is also the first-ever production car fitted with race-spec spool valve dampers, which are four-way adjustable.
Finally, while the changes to the body may at first appear slight, they are all specifically to improve performance. A new front splitter connects to an underbody panel to cut lift at speed, and the fender flares over the front wheels have been redesigned to flow into the extended rocker panels to improve airflow around the car. Finally, that muscular rear spoiler isn’t just there for looks.
We can’t wait to see this car in person to judge for ourselves what this all new Z28 is really like. But until then we’ll just have to get by with this video Chevrolet made showing the new Z28 get around the Nurbergring in a blistering 7:37.47 (in less than perfect weather).
