General Motors Reveals A New Logo After 50 Years

General Motors Reveals A New Logo After 50 Years

For GM faithful, the small square badge that adorns so many beloved Chevy, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, GMC, Hummer, Saturn, and many more, is one of honor. It’s been a staple, a constant, a strong image that fans of the General could look to and know they owned a piece of quality engineering.

Well, it seems the time has come for General Motors to reevaluate its priorities, and thus, a new logo has been born. Now, this isn’t the first time the logo has seen a redesign, but it is the first time in more than a decade, and it’s a substantial change, not a minor tweak. In fact, this is the first time the manufacturer has substantially changed its logo since 1964, according to GM representatives.

Which do you prefer?

Fans will immediately notice some key design elements that set the new logo apart from the last. First is the now-lowercase letters. Apparently, the new “m” is a tip-of-the-hat to General Motor’s new all-electric offerings and overall direction. According to the company, the three “legs” of the lowercase-m are meant to resemble the prongs of an electric plug.

Furthermore, the color has also been changed. The company says, it “symbolizes their shift toward electric vehicles, and the coloring is meant to evoke “clean skies.”

We can only imagine the cost involved with creating a new logo such as this for a major corporation like GM. The company reports that the new logo was made in-house by GM’s own design team. The font, color, and overall design were all crafted to be a part of a new marketing campaign for GM.

What does the future hold for GM? The new GMC HUMMER EV seems to be a glimpse into its direction.

The campaign is called “Everybody In,” alluding to GM’s electric vehicle program. Their decision to double-down on the electric vehicle initiative comes as no surprise. All one needs to do is visit the GM website and right on the home-page they’ll be greeted with the new GMC HUMMER EV electric concept with the article title, “GMC HUMMER EV Lays Foundation For GM’s All-Electric Future.”

The company has even reported, “it hopes to change preconceived ideas about the sorts of people who buy electric vehicles,” as stated by Deborah Wahl, GM’s Global Chief Marketing Officer.

If this new marketing campaign, the Cadillac Lyriq, and HUMMER EV are indicators of what’s to come, we expect the company will continue to announce radical new electric vehicle offerings throughout 2021.

In any case, the new logo is here, and it seems to be a bit polarizing with most of our fanbase falling to one side. We’ll let you guess and comment as to what side that is in the comment section below. Let us know what you think of the new logo, and the new direction General Motors is heading.
