The Car Craft Summer Nationals, held each year in St. Paul, Minnesota draw some of the coolest rods, customs and muscle cars from around the country. There’s always a massive car show as well as several competition categories and other car hobby related activities as well.

A crowd favorite and mainstay of this event though is the burnout contest. Open to pretty much any vehicle on the grounds, this smoke fest is guaranteed entertainment for all who love the sound of horsepower and the smell of burnt rubber. Winners in this display of tire shredding carnage received a trophy and a gift certificate from TCI the burnout contest sponsor.

Second place this year went to none other than those pesky kids in the Mystery Machine. Fred and Shaggy however, may have a hard time explaining the mystery of the blown tires to Daphne and Velma. Watch the Mystery Machine begin it’s burnout at around 0:49, only to blow the right rear tire at 0:57 in the video.

Reasonable stunts for the purposes of garnering crowd approval are encouraged.

There were plenty of GM G-bodies and F-bodies as well as Chevy trucks on hand throughout the video, all smoking the hides in an effort to garner some short lived adoration from the crowd assembled in the stands and maybe walk away with the trophy.

The oddest vehicle we saw in the mix is at 1:34, a van with an unusual paint scheme and a chopped off top. It’s not clear from the video but it’s either a complete conversion to a roadster or a convertible. 

Stunts are encourage to get the crowd’s attention so checkout the hemi powered rod at 3:30. This thing was not only a cool looking and great sounding rod, but they managed to make the tire smoke pink and we’re not talking a little pink either this was a display that lasted the entire burnout and bordered on red in color.

No burnout contest would be complete without some carnage either. There are of course plenty of blown tires as demonstrated throughout the video, then there’s this 77 Nova, belonging to Conrad Johnson. Not only did he violently shred and grenade the right rear tire, he also managed to wrinkle the right rear quarter panel in the process. Too bad, it appeared otherwise to have been a really nice car, but it’s only sheetmetal. At least he managed to take top honors in the burnout contest.

Top five awards went to Jess Anderson, Tony Elman, Kevin Jordan, The man with the Mystery Machine (no name given in video) and overall winner Conrad Johnson.
