The 1935 Hudson Terraplane driven by Johnny Depp in Michael Mann’s 2009 John Dillinger biopic, Public Enemies, is due to hit the auction block next month in Florida.
Hudson’s were reportedly a personal favorite of infamous Depression Era anti-hero John Dillinger, who preferred them to contemporary rivals Ford and Chevy due to the Hudson’s superior performance and handling. Hudson’s of the day could easily hit the 100 mph mark, making them one hell of a getaway car! Keep in mind that in the mid 30s, hitting 100 might as well have been light-speed!
This particular model, a Terraplane, would have come factory equipped with a 212 c.i. flathead 6, cranking out either 88 or 100 h.p, depending on whether or not a low or high compression head was ordered when new. Backing the naturally torquey inliner would have been a non-synchro 3-speed manual trans, pretty standard fair for the time.
This Hudson was outfitted with a tried and true 350ci Chevy Small Block, backed by a Saginaw 3-speed manual. This way they were guaranteed a decent amount of reliable power and while still showing the driver going through the gears. The Hollywood car stayed true to keeping with the time period, since the Hudson Terraplane never came with an automatic trans, though an electro-mechanical automatic shifter, known as the “Electric Hand” was an available option from 1935-1938.
When the production team found the old Hudson at The Bay City Motor Company, the car had been refinished in a tasteful cream color contrasted by the interior’s dark red velvet. They had apparently scoured the country for a suitable car since they felt it was critical to be as accurate as possible when it came to Dillinger’s vehicle of choice. By all accounts, it was Johnny Depp himself who made the final selection and picked this car.
The auction takes place in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida March 14th-16th at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center and is open to the public. For more info, visit Auctions America’s website.
