Clayton Slaughter’s 1929 Roadster Built For The Race of Gentlemen

“While I enjoy a good car show, a sitting car just never gives the car the justice it deserves,” stated Clayton Slaughter of Clayton’s Hot Rods.

Slaughter knew that The Race of Gentlemen was something he wanted to participate in after the first time he saw photos and videos from the event. For those of you that don’t know about the event, it is an annual beach race held on New Jersey shore beaches and was founded by Oilers Car Club, established in 1947.

Knowing that he was going to participate this year, Slaughter started to get the car together in June of this year, just so he would have some time before the actual event – he built this 1929 roadster in conjunction with three other full builds that he has going – talk about time management to the max!

The ’29 roadster body and chassis was sourced from his friend Dave’s father, who unfortunately passed away before Slaughter completed the build – the chassis came with a built c-motor of which the internals are unknown, so Slaughter worked off of what was in front of him.

For the engine, Slaughter used a high-rise, two carb manifold with two Stromberg 97s, a custom header, high-compression head, 3.54-geared rearend, a Scintilla Vertex magneto, a ’39 transmission, and Model A mechanical brakes amongst a few other touches. The build was finished off in a brushed-on Washington Blue with temporary race lettering.

The Race of Gentlemen was this past weekend, but we can already tell that this is an event that we’ll definitely have to cover next year.
