SEMA 2017: Chip Foose’s ’32 Ford 5-Window Coupe

Chip Foose, the car-building legend, television personality, and hot rodding hero, unveiled his latest completed project, a period-modified five-window coupe that is powered by a supercharged flathead engine, upgraded with custom 180-degree Magnaflow headers.

Foose debuted the car on the opening day of the 2017 SEMA show in front of a crowd of media. “I felt that this car needed to be more period-correct,” said Foose. “I could get a great body from United Pacific and cut it up, but this all-original body needed to be kept that way.”

The car looked at home in the Magnaflow booth. Magnaflow, the Oceanside, California, company, built the custom headers that mate to the Mike Herman H&H Flathead engine build, topped with an Italmecanicca supercharger. The Magnaflow headers feature equal-length tubes in a 180-degree layout to fit snugly in the tight engine bay.

Mostly OEM components were used throughout the drivetrain, including the Ford 3-Speed transmission and the original torque tube. The rear end has been upgraded to a Cyclone quick change to make service easier. This restomod rolls on 18-inch wheels designed by Chip and manufactured by Curtis Speed, wrapped in a set of Coker tires. Foose Design painted this hot rod in a BASF-sourced “Avocado” color that contrasts the beige and wood-clad interior.
