Late-era second-gen F-Bodies used to be darn near worthless. Rubber bumpers and strangled smog motors had purists turning their noses up in favor of earlier steel bumper cars. The modern retromod movement put a stake in the heart of all that pony car snobbery, and now rubber bumper Trans Ams (and Camaros) are all the rage.
In retrospect, late-seventies/early-eighties F-Bodies have aged well. Trans Am in particular, with its rectangular headlights and Polynesian war canoe beak, have become great starting points for brutally competent restomods. Ryan’s Rod and Kustoms out of South Carolina, built a doozy of a 1978 Trans Am christened “Mullet Missile” for SEMA 2021. With the help of suspension gurus RideTech, it’s the new blueprint for second-gen GM pony car restomods.
Under the screaming chicken on the hood, a 6.0L LS V8 now resides pumping out 600hp. The builders wanted the chassis to be able to handle all that power, so they installed a RideTech CoilOver Suspension Kit for 1970-1981 F-Bodies.
According to RideTech, “Our 1970-1981 Camaro / Firebird Coilover package includes everything you need to completely upgrade your existing suspension. The package contains a complete TruTurn front kit, front MuscleBar, rear 4-Link, and four HQ Series Coilovers for every corner of your vehicle. The benefit of buying a complete suspension system is that it takes all of the guesswork out when purchasing a new suspension.” Go here for all the details and pricing.
