Riding around in a 1964 Ford F100 with your grandpa will create some great memories. Lee Brooks was lucky enough to do just that, and then he got the chance to own that same truck. These days, the F100 is powered by a twin-turbo LS engine and rips off nine-second passes.
Before Lee got a hold of the F100, it sat in a barn from 1996 until 2011. The truck originally belonged to Lee’s grandfather, who would take him on rides in the truck when he was a kid. When the opportunity came up for Lee to buy the truck, he was all in and ready to build something special.
Lee wanted to tackle this project with his father Larry, since he was the one who introduced him to racing. There are numerous pictures of Lee inside his father’s 1969 Camaro, dreaming of a time when he could race something of his own. The F100 isn’t a stranger to the race track either. Lee’s grandfather used the truck to tow his 1954 Chevy to Hallsville Dragway.
This truck was built not only to go fast, but a real gem to drive on the street. Lee grafted the front clip from a 1970 Nova to the truck and stuck a 5.3 LS engine in between the frame rails. A Circle D torque converter and 4L80 transmission send the horsepower back to a Ford 9-inch rearend. A Holley EFI system controls the engine. The truck still uses the OEM chassis from the firewall back, and Lee built the roll cage himself.
When Lee learned about Drag Week, he knew that’s what he wanted to do with the truck. So, after eight years of hard work, the father and son duo got to take the old F100 on Drag Week and had a great time doing it.
