Head Stud Upgrade: ARP Studs For Gen 1 Small-Block Chevys

When building or refreshing a Gen 1 small-block Chevy, the fasteners holding the cylinder heads in place can make the difference between a reliable engine and one plagued by sealing issues. The ARP 134-4001 head stud kit is designed specifically for Gen 1 1955–1991 small-block Chevys, offering a level of strength and consistency that factory head bolts cannot match.

Why Head Studs Are The Better Choice

Head studs provide several advantages over traditional bolts. First, they offer more consistent and even clamping force. Because studs remain stationary in the block during installation, the torque applied to the nut is used to clamp the head, not to overcome friction between the bolt shank and the threads in the block. This reduces the chance of thread damage and makes achieving accurate torque values easier.

Additionally, studs help with alignment. With both heads and gaskets sliding over fixed studs, components seat precisely, minimizing the risk of gasket misalignment. This is especially important in high-compression, boosted, or nitrous-fed engines where cylinder pressures are higher than stock.

The ARP 134-4001 kit uses premium 8740 chrome moly steel, heat-treated for superior strength and finished with a black oxide coating for corrosion resistance. With a 170,000 psi tensile strength, these studs can withstand the rigors of serious performance builds without stretching or losing clamping load.

Why You Shouldn’t Reuse Stock Head Bolts

Reusing factory head bolts might seem like a budget-friendly choice, but it can be a costly mistake. Many OEM head bolts are torque-to-yield (TTY) or have been stretched beyond their safe limit during previous installations. Once a fastener has been permanently stretched, it can no longer provide the correct clamping force, leading to blown head gaskets or even catastrophic engine damage.

Even non-TTY bolts can develop corrosion in the threads or suffer from fatigue after decades of use. Considering the age of most Gen 1 small-block Chevys, it’s safe to assume that factory hardware has seen years of heat cycles, vibration, and potential over-torquing, none of which help long-term reliability.

Built For Reliability And Repeatability

ARP makes sure that their kits include instructions and torque specs for all the fasteners.

One of the biggest advantages of upgrading to ARP head studs is reusability. Unlike TTY bolts, these studs can be installed, removed, and reinstalled multiple times without loss of integrity, provided they’re thoroughly cleaned and lubricated. This makes them a smart investment for anyone who plans to tear down and rebuild their engine for maintenance, upgrades, or racing.

For any Gen 1 small-block Chevy build, from a mild cruiser to a full race engine, swapping factory head bolts for ARP studs ensures your heads stay clamped tight, your gaskets stay sealed, and your engine stays healthy.
