Pulling the legendary V10 out of a Dodge Viper is a bold move — one guaranteed to upset a lot of purists — but the crew at Boosted Motorsports just proved it could be worth it. They created the world’s first single-turbo Hurricane I6-swapped Dodge Viper, and the numbers it just threw down on the dyno are absolutely insane. Let’s see if they can prove that the new Hurricane platform is a serious contender in the high-horsepower world.
From Twin-Turbo to Single Monster
This build is far from a simple drop-in. The team started with a factory twin-turbo DOHC Hurricane HO engine and immediately threw the stock turbos in the bin. They fabricated a custom, in-house twin-scroll manifold to mount a massive HPT 7175 single turbo. To handle the huge boost, the factory air-to-water intercooler was replaced with a giant front-mount air-to-air unit. Backing it all up is a built Stage 2 transmission that is ready to handle all the power the new setup can make.
Record-Breaking I6-swapped Dodge Viper
With tuner Chance on the laptop, the single-turbo Hurricane started making serious steam. After a series of tuning pulls, the car laid down a massive 846 wheel horsepower and 706 lb-ft of torque on 29 psi of boost. What’s even crazier is that the tuner reported the car was super light on timing and showed zero signs of knock or detonation. This meant the engine was happy and had plenty more power left on the table, but they decided to keep it conservative before heading to the Roadkill Nights event.
The “Hold My Beer” Race Tune
Conservative didn’t last long. For the race, the team loaded up a hold my beer tune that cranked the boost up from 29 to 31 psi. This two-pound increase is estimated to have pushed the car to well over 900 wheel horsepower. The most impressive part? The car has been taking the abuse without breaking a sweat, getting daily-driven on the street at these incredible power levels.
What’s Next? The Hunt for 1,000 HP
They’re just getting started. Boosted Motorsports is already planning the next phase, with bigger direct injection injectors and a high-pressure fuel pump on the way. With an engine that’s showing zero signs of stress at over 900 horsepower, the team is on a mission to find the absolute limit of the Hurricane platform. This I6-swapped Dodge Viper isn’t just a record-breaker; it’s a pioneer, and the hunt for a four-digit power number is officially on.
We know this is going to traditional Viper enthusiasts’ heads explode. Which is half the fun. Those 8.0- , 8.3- , and 8.4-liter engines did amazing things, winning races on tracks from Englishtown to LeMans. But isn’t this what hot rodding is all about?
We say good luck to them.
