The modern Challenger has all the makings of a great muscle machine, with an available HEMI engine, wide stance and refined retro looks. Because of it’s already impressive nature, the Challenger makes for a great platform for some really cool custom designs, like the Challenger Blacktop created by Mopar Underground back in 2008. While this beauty has been around for a couple years now, we haven’t seen much of it lately. So when we saw it pop up on AMCarGuide, we thought it deserved another look.
The 2009 Challenger Blacktop was created as a concept car for the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show by Mopar Underground, a design group known for modifying and restyling Dodge and Jeep platforms.
Based on a 2009 Challenger R/T, the Blacktop is powered by a standard 5.7L HEMI V8 matted to a six-speed manual transmission. This lasting combination is good for 376hp and 410 lb.-ft. of torque. On top of the engine, Mopar Underground added a few parts from the Mopar catalog, including a cold air intake and a dual cat-back exhaust, allowing the powerhouse under the hood to breath more easily.
To improve the ride while giving the car its noticeably squatty stance, the Challenger Blacktop was equipped with a Mopar strut tower brace and coil-over suspension. The car sits atop 22-inch Dodge Viper wheels made by Factory Reproductions that are wrapped in Dunlop rubber.
The Challenger’s unique look is accomplished by the addition of custom Mopar Underground spoilers and front brow. The car is finished in a black-on-black custom paint scheme, with the bright red accents of a Katzkin leather interior complimenting the red detailing along the front grill, side stripes and wheel rims.
Mopar Underground’s Challenger Blacktop is definitely one mean looking muscle car. With its aggressive stance, unique paint scheme and modified body design, this Mopar’s looks will be attractive for decades.
