Check out the latest installment in Chryslers “Halftime in America,” campaign. This time it’s featuring a Black Challenger R/T, a veteran father returning home from duty and his son Shaun. Produced by ad agency Wieden and Kennedy, the spot spins a tale of father and son reunited and a trip to school in the family muscle car. Clint Eastwood is conspicuously absent. YouTube has the spot.
After you get the whole Norman Rockwell slant, the best part of the spot is the Challenger slinking through the neighborhood on the way to drop Shaun off at school. It’s a black mid-level R/T with red stripes and chrome wheels and might be the best looking of the three trim levels that Dodge offers.
Shaun is one lucky kid. Instead of a minivan or Camry, he gets shuttled to school in the coolest retro pony car on the planet. When the current crop of muscle coupes vanishes, how will this tale be told in the future? With a Camry or an Accord? Sadly the automobile business has changed so much I don’t think people even care anymore.
In the meantime, hit play and go along with the premise. For 60 seconds, we can forget about globalization, an Italian owned Chrysler and other modern day unpleasantness and slip into a world where Dad drives a HEMI Challenger and everything will be okay.
