Royal Purple has announced the final results of it’s Royal Purple High Performance Driving Experience Contest. The winner is Scott Shanks of Gardner, Kansas and his sweet 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible. Mr. Shanks can now participate in the 2012 Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour June 2-9 as a guest of Royal Purple.
The winning entry was chosen among the over 340 entries submitted to the Royal Purple Facebook fan page between March 2 and March 16, 2012. From the initial pool of entries, a panel of five independent judges selected 10 finalists. The final selection was made by popular vote open to the 158,000 Royal Purple Facebook fans.
Making the trip in the winning Challenger R/T Convertible should no problem at all! Rather than having to rely on machinery built near the middle of the last century, this yellow gem features a stout 6.1L HEMI crate motor. Power is transmitted through a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed Trans to an Eaton true-track differential spinning 4:10 gears inside of a custom Moser MO875 rear. Horsepower at this point registers 420!
Steering and stopping has also been modified to keep up with the demands of 2012. Rather than rely on the old torsion bar set up, a Riley Motorsports AlterKation coil-over suspension now plants the front wheels. Hotchkiss leaf springs are bolted up in the back.
Billet Specialties wheels wrapped in Nitto 555 tires connect the car to the pavement and Wilwood four-piston calipers that squeeze 12 inch rotors on all four corners bring it all to a safe stop.
The classic lines of the 1970 Challenger and the striking Viper Race Yellow paint scheme are just a couple of the features that made Scott Shanks' entry a favorite among the voters!
Shanks kept it old school in the looks and creature comforts departments. The interior was restored to 1970 stock specs right down to the Hurst pistol grip shifter. Even the custom Pioneer stereo system has been integrated with the factory eight track tape deck.
The exterior is also unaltered. However, it has been enhanced by front and rear spoilers that give it a pro-touring look along with rare elastomeric bumpers from a 1971 Challenger. The eye-catching Viper Race Yellow paint along with the custom HEMI stripe makes the car very hard to lose in a parking lot.
Along with the paid registration fees for the Power Tour, the winner’s prizes also include VIP parking at tour stops, a spot in the Royal Purple booth, a variety of Royal Purple goodies and a Visa gift card that will help with traveling expenses. That’s going to make participating in what should be one of the great road trips of the year, even more exciting!
