While the DeLorean DMC-12 is a fascinating car with its gull-wing doors, stainless steel body panels and relationship to the Back to the Future series, the car certainly isn’t known for its engine. That’s why it wasn’t surprising when the DeLorean Motor Company announced their future intentions to build an all-electric DeLorean model back in October, and even less surprising that no one had a fit about it. While we haven’t heard much about the future models since, our friends over at Autoblog happened to find one lurking in the basement of the New York Auto Show last week and got a few more tidbits about the future car, including the expected purchase price.
The all-electric DeLorean is expected to be available for purchase in 2013 under the name DMCev. The model is set to be powered by a 32-KiloWatt Hour battery pack that will allow for a range of about 100 miles and a top speed of 125mph. Currently the DeLorean Motor Company is aiming for a 0 to 60mph time of under 6 seconds, although published preliminary specifications give the car a 0 to 60mph time of about 5 seconds. Either way, the battery is supposed to be able to be recharged using an average 110-volt outlet in about three or four hours.
Unfortunately, the DeLorean Motor Company has a long way to go before being able to produce the new models because they are still in the testing stages with the only rolling example of their work being a converted DMC-12. Right now, both DeLorean and Louisiana’s Epic EV are working on figuring out the best electric motor and inverter combination. Currently the prototype uses a direct current motor but production vehicles are expected to use alternating current motors for better overall performance. Only time will tell if the DeLorean Motor Company can perfect their new idea in time for a launch early next year.
While the electric DeLorean model will definitely cut down on the need to purchase gas as often, buyers can expect to pay almost four times what they would spend on a base Toyota Prius to purchase the car. The expected purchase price of the DMCev is a whopping $95,000. Guess that means you’ll have to choose between going green and saving some green.
