AMXess and Jim Day a Happy Pair with New RideTech Hardware

The AMC AMX is not only a unique car, it is also a short wheel-based wonder that few are daring enough to throw around on the track. But that didn’t stop our friend Jim Day from creating a pro-touring powerhouse out of one. Of course, we’re talking about AMXess, Day’s ’69 AMX that we first introduced to you last year.

This LS3 pushes out a lot more power than the AMX is used to but without proper suspension and braking capabilities, it would all go to waste.

While we fell in love with the car and its burbling 550hp all-aluminum LS3 power plant when it was featured in the Centerforce Clutches booth at the 2011 SEMA Show, we were even more impressed with it as Day competed in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge. But AMXess’ skills weren’t limited to last season. We found out from RideTech’s Facebook page that improvements from RideTech and Wilwood made AMXess the car to beat at the recent Midwest F-Body Association (MFBA) track days held at Road America.

During testing in April, Day discovered a quirk in AMXess’ demeanor. With the car’s uncanny ability to stick in the front, Day was unable to create any understeer. This presented a problem in trying to drift the car in the corners a bit. A set of RideTech Triple Adjustable Shocks were the missing piece to the puzzle. With the new hardware and a little bit of perfecting, AMXess was able to run within the top ten cars at the Midwest F-Body Association event, laying down its fastest lap time of 2 minutes and 41 seconds on Sunday.

A brake balance bar adjuster from Wilwood as well as Polymatrix B racing pads also helped AMXess in its glorious performance, allowing Day to brake hard and late.

Both the RideTech and Wilwood components greatly contributed to Day’s ability to reel in a Nissan GT-R and a Corvette in the video above. He also catches a Porsche after chasing it down from a mile behind. Needless to say, AMXess’ new products did the trick and Day is a very happy customer.
