In the land we call “Down Under”, there’s a 1971 Firebird (with Nebraska plates, no less) that is getting converted back to LHD. We say ‘back’ because the current owner, Leigh, got the car after someone tried to convert it to RHD. “Tried” is an overstatement, apparently, because Leigh said it was a real mess. As if it’s not enough work to do the conversion in the first place, but to have to fix what was previously botched? What is the saying about labor rates if someone else worked on it first?
Although he tells us at Pro.Touring.com that he’s been on a budget, he had big plans for the car. He found a straight Formula hood with the Ram Air IV still functioning, and we have to agree with him that it was one of the best looking hoods on a Firebird. Seeing the amount of work that Leigh put into this car is simply amazing, from start to finish. He spent hours upon hours making this one of the better F-body builds we’ve seen.
He kept the suspension almost stock with some refinements, and kept the brakes and interior mostly stock GM parts and even kept the rear finned drums, which he realizes is an odd choice with everyone going to big brakes these days.
For power, what else other than a 455 stuffed under the hood and it’s as detailed as the rest of the car. The interior got Corvette seats, a reconditioned dash and a new set of gauges. And check out the electric green paint as it sat in the booth, we did tell you he went green with this Firebird didn’t we?
