Let’s face it: today’s car commercials just don’t cut it. The majority of them feature the car driving along the screen with whatever incentives are currently being offered on that particular model. There’s no thought involved, no passion, no excitement.
Car companies might as well be selling dish washers if they’re going to be making advertisements as generic as that. The sad thing is that many of today’s millennials don’t even want to buy cars as much as those of us from Generation X/Y according to recent articles. Today car companies may make cars that people want, but when was the last time they made an advertisement that makes the average person want to buy one?
Yeah we couldn’t think of any either, so when we found this vintage advertisement for the classic ’57 Plymouth Belvedere convertible, we had to share it. Like many advertisements of the day, it immediately starts with a subliminal message involving a young man’s fantasy.
Except when he walks passed the beautiful blonde (much to her dismay) to inspect the brand new Plymouth, we couldn’t help but chuckle. The ad talks about the smooth, fuel efficient and powerful Golden Commando “Fury engine” to it’s striking new lines with miles of chrome.
Car movie buffs will instantly think of the old John Carpenter movie, Christine, when they look at this car. However, that was a ’58 Fury coupe model, and the front grille, headlights, rear fins, and trim were different from this model year.
