The Mazda Miata used to be the quintessential chick car until it was knocked out of the top spot by the new era, water cooled FWD Beetle in 1997. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But for the other half of the people on the planet, the new Beetle was short on testosterone and the J Mays styling aged quickly becoming more Roger Rabbit than cool. All of that changed with the redesign for 2012 when the Toon Town clown suit was traded for Bauhaus threads, a chopped top and a much needed rethink of the interior.

For SEMA,VW fanboy site VWvortex.com took a 2013 model, added a 500 HP 4-banger and AWD and christened the thing the “VWvortex Super Beetle Project,” in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the “People’s Car“.

The hormone injection was achieved with help from tuner APR and their Stage IV GTX Turbocharger system, updated fuel system and heavy duty intercooler spinning a 4Motion AWD system lifted from the Golf R. Other hi-po upgrades include Recaro seats, short throw 6-speed manual transmission and Volkswagen Racing 6-Piston brakes. The car’s been lowered via a H&R adjustable coil over suspension system and sway bars, and it looks all mean and hunkered down on 3-piece 19″ wheels and big rubber.

Matte Azure Blue paint, 911-esque spoiler and cool “Super Beetle” badges distinguish this as not your run of the mill Beetle. And not a run of the mill chick car either.

 Sadly, VW says no production version is planned.
