As the new year gets off to a start, classic car owners in California can rejoice. That’s because they can now order new “vintage” black and yellow or blue and yellow license plates through the Legacy License Plate Program. As we found out from Hemmings Daily, plates became available to order on New Year’s Day. Now all we have to do is wait for enough people to order them, and we’ll be in good shape.
As we told you back in October, the Legacy License Plate Program makes it possible for classic car owners to license their vehicles using new license plates created to look like the vintage plates issued in California during the era of their vehicles. This includes yellow plates with black lettering for 1950s cars, black plates with yellow lettering for 1960s cars, and blue plates with yellow lettering for 1970s cars. As we found out through Hemmings, these plates can be purchased as standard issue plates or personalized.
The Legacy License Plate Program will officially go into affect when at least 2,500 of each plate are ordered. A total of 7,500 plates must be ordered in the next two years for the vintage remakes to be issued. Until then, classic car owners must keep their fingers crossed that there is enough interest in purchasing the new plates, or the vintage look-alikes will not be produced.
If you’re interested in ordering Legacy license plates for your vintage California car, you can order them now through the DMV website. Plates are $50 and must be pre-paid and ordered before January 1, 2015. Full refunds will be given shortly after that time if the program does not officially go into affect due to not enough orders being placed to issue the plates.
