The Fast & Furious franchise is like eating a 1/2-pound grilled patty melt with a huge plate of chili fries. Sure, it sounds good. You might even enjoy it at the time, but you’ll walk out regretting it in the end. This series has been a hard compromise for us car guys. Yes, they’re movies about hot cars, and yes, there are some pretty cool cars in these films; but they’re so rife with Hollywood cheese that you leave the theater feeling greasy and a little nauseous.
This time around, the cast has been pulled from all five movies, tying the series together (because it was the blatant lack of continuity that was bothering us). Yes, we get Vin Diesel and Paul Walker back for another lap, but we also get Jordana Brewster (sorry for the above screen capture) from the first and penultimate films, who’s carrying – presumably – Paul’s love child (plot twist!), Tyrese “I Hungry” Gibson from number two, Tokyo Drift’s villain Sung Kang, and Ludacris (who was so forgettable in 2 Fast, 2 Furious that we had to look up which sequel he was in).
Oh yeah, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is after them. He’s bigger! He’s balder! And he’s got a goatee!
Based in Rio de Janeiro, the gang is forced by some drug lord to perform “one final job” to earn their freedom (from what, we’re not sure. Maybe their student loans). The Rock too, has been freed from his Faustian deal with Disney, finally allowing him to return to making second-tier Michael Bay flicks.
We’ve already reported on Fast Five’s use of the new ’11 Charger Pursuit edition in addition to a couple of matte black LX-based Chargers. But, we also spotted a Nissan GT-R, a wrong-side-drive Ford GT, a couple of Porsches, a 350Z, and of course, a flat black ’70 Charger. Make sure to watch the trailer, even if you’re not going to see the flick. At least you get to watch Paul Walker land face-first on the tail of a Grand Sport Corvette clone! Smack!
