If you thought “Cash for Clunkers” otherwise known as “The Car Allowance Rebate System” was a goofy,”PC” train wreck, then check out this bit from GNXRegistry.com. Evidently it was rumored that a government issued list of clunker candidates included a certain 1987 “ASC Incorporated model,” aka the Buick GNX, that qualified for early termination. While over a hundred Regals were destroyed, it turns out that one of them indeed was the hallowed triple black GNX model. So if you’re a Tri-Shield fan, you’ll cringe to know that one owner saw the “Cash for Clunkers” program as a way out of his GNX, and it paid the ultimate price. In the meantime, check out some interesting stats.
While the culling was sizable, the impact on the 80’s Regal population was minimal. Of the 120 Regals destroyed, 116 were middle of the road 3.8 litre V-6 and 307 V-8 equipped models, and a couple of turbocharged Regals were crushed as well. An oddball 4.3 liter diesel and a Turbo-T Limited bit the dust, too, according to the registry.
We’ve all watched in horror as perfectly good cars were euthanized by draining the oil and then filling the engine with a “kool-aid” of liquid sodium silicate and run until they suddenly seize up and die. 677,081 cars were subjected to this drink of death…Not only could these destroyed cars been donated to the needy or SOMEBODY, the program also took out a huge chunk out of the national used car inventory artificially driving the cost of pre owned vehicles up almost 30%. Even worse, most of the sales (and profits) of the news cars sold lined the pockets of foreign car manufacturers. So much for helping “local” companies and communities.
Well, THAT was fun. Who knows if we’ll see another round of this program? For now, old cars around the country will have a reprieve from “Portlandia” logic and the “green,” anti-car mob from Washington.
