Every year, countless enthusiasts head to Goodguys events all across the country to compete for notable titles from general awards to special designations, but only a fraction of those cars that compete come out on top. Fortunately for the winners of these awards, they are always highly deserved, including the Classic Instruments Trophy Dash National Award that went to Gary McKay’s beautiful ’57 Ford Custom 300 for 2012. While many Classic Instruments customers competed for the designation, five made the finals in 2012, and once votes were tallied, it was this unique street machine that came out above the rest.
Built by Wicked Fabrication of Auburn, Washington, McKay’s Custom 300 was a unique and envied sight at the 25th Pacific Northwest Nationals in Puyallup, Washington. It was there that, having made such a grand impression on everyone, it won a Goodguys Builder’s Choice Award, given by Art and Craig Morrison.
With a custom Morrison chassis, GT IFS and 9-inch rearend, rear 4-link and Strange Engineering adjustable coilovers and axles, the Ford Custom 300 is a car built to be run.
Helping it with that task is a supercharged Shelby GT 500 5.4L V-8 engine attached to a Tremec six-speed. Adding insult to injury, the car also sports 13-inch, 6-piston Wilwood brakes and massive 19- and 20-inch Schott “Venom” wheels.
While all the finalists for the Classic Instruments Trophy Dash National Award were truly first class, it was McKay’s Ford that took the top prize. Congratulations goes out to McKay and Classic Instruments for this amazing award-winning build, as well as to all the finalists from the 2012 Goodguys season.
