Skateboarding has long been a favorite activity of children, teens, and even adults, and while some of us can barely stand on a board without falling off, let alone perform any sort of movement or tricks, we thoroughly commend those who have been able to showcase their many talents atop a tiny wooden platform with four wheels. Unfortunately for one skater, that talent we speak of is getting him in trouble with the law. No, not because he damaged a vehicle or trespassed, but because he nearly doubled the speed limit on a South African roadway and made a video of the feat to prove it. And you thought car enthusiasts were the only ones pushing the limits. Check out the video above.

According to Skate on GrindTV, the daredevil skater in the video above is none other than Dec’io Lourenc’o, one of South Africa’s most well known skaters. Set out to have some fun and showcase his talents, Lourenc’o and a friend (André Roux) took to Cape Town, South Africa’s famous Kloof Nek road to see just how fast the skater could get going before he hit one of those dreaded speed cameras.

With Kloof Nek being one of the steepest roads in Cape Town and long popularized by skateboarders for its incredible incline, the road presented the perfect stadium for the stunt.

Clad in a helmet, gloves and otherwise regular street gear, 24-year-old Lourenc’o starts his decent of the road amongst mild traffic in the video above. Certainly hitting corners at an amazing pace while avoiding oncoming cars, Lourenc’o stays incredibly in control. Then, just after the one-minute mark, Lourenc’o trips the traffic camera set to catch negligent speeders going down the road at more than the allotted 60kph (37mph). According to a GPS tracker on his foot, Lourenc’o passed the camera at 110kph or 68mph. Although celebrated with an excited hand gesture, Lourenc’o’s trip continues on down the hill in flamboyant fashion, showing just what this incredible enthusiast is capable of.

While we assume most the 1.1 million YouTube viewers who watched this video had the same amazed reaction as we did when we saw this video (the video currently has over 7,000 likes), Cape Town officials are not pleased. While threats of punishment for the skater’s feat began circulating almost as soon as the video went live in late January, the Global Post recently confirmed that Lourenc’o is being charged with reckless and negligent road behavior.

This decision not only comes because of Lourenc’o’s amazing 68mph traffic camera fly-by, but also because of his reckless and dangerous maneuvers on the public road, a place where skateboarding is not allowed, according to officials.

But Lourenc’o remains undeterred by the charges, as you can see in the AVA Online video below.

Keeping with his live life to the fullest attitude, Lourenc’o explains that his passion for skating continues even after the trouble he’s gotten into with the law. Will we see another video of Lourenc’o skating on public streets? Who knows, but we’re certain that he’ll continue what he does best whether or not there is a camera there to catch it the next time he straps on his gear.
