Sci-Fi TV Show With Mad Max-Style Modern Dodge Charger

As gearheads, we always love seeing some of our favorite cars in movies and television shows. Most of the time, we can find the mistakes that are made in dialogue when referring to cars, and sometimes the build is so ridiculous that it wouldn’t make sense to actually make those modifications.

One such oddity in the world of television and movie cars is the weathering process to make a car look old, beaten, rugged, or what have you. With the classics, it makes sense: rust is the cancer that has eaten up many classics and turned a great car into a beater. But when a modern car with plastic bumpers shows a bit of rust on those bumpers, well, it just doesn’t seem right.

It makes us wonder if they realize that even though it’s for effect, a plastic bumper just doesn’t rust. It weathers, it suffers clear coat degradation and paint fade, but rust? Okay, it’s all for effect. We get it.

When we came across these pictures of the Dodge Charger planned for the television sci-fi series Defiance coming up on the SYFY Channel in April, 2013, we liked the idea that a modern muscle car is used. But then looking at the Mad Max adornments makes us wonder if a professional was consulted before they started modifying the car.

Seen at the Dodge display at the Chicago Auto Show, this Charger is going to save Earth from alien attacks.

The oddities on this car don’t stop at the rusty bumper covers. The twin exhaust pipes that exit from the passenger side at the upper fender are an impossibility. The fact that they’re only on one side is kind of strange, too. Then there’s the ginormous hood scoop that is a cool reminder of the early Mopars, but the rusty squirrel-cage air cleaner defies logic. Why would a car need a hood scoop if you have to cut a hole in it for the air filter to stick through?

Still, in a Mad Max way it’s pretty cool that a Charger was featured, nonetheless. At least the lawmakers will be saving the world from aliens in a pretty cool car, though. We do like the Defiance Lawekeeper shield on the side of the car, though. It has that “my kid drew it” feel to it, and it sort of reminds one of those Christmas cookies with the sprinkles on them.

The weirdly-shaped and oddly-attached roll bar only protects the rear cabin. But this is sci-fi, it's supposed to be strange, right?
