With the demise of the Ford Crown Victoria in 2011 the competition is on to decide who will take over as the reigning choice by Police and State Troopers. In this video, produced by Dodge, we see the Charger competing head to head with the new Ford Taurus, Chevy Caprice, and Chevy Tahoe. The evaluation is being done on a Michigan road course by multiple members of the law, and all car are being put through their paces. We can’t argue that the Charger looks meaner than either the Ford or Chevy cars, but we’ll have to leave it to a different day to see how the data stacked up as well as what the choice of law officials will be.
One thing we are thrilled to see is that rear-wheel drive is making a comeback in a big way. Crown Vic’s ruled for years in the police car market due to their large stuff-hauling capability and high-speed stability configuration of rear wheel drive. For quite some time they were the only ones on the block to still offer rear wheel drive, as only just a few years ago the only choice from Chevy and Dodge were the front wheel drive Impala and Intrepid.
The new Chevy Caprice is actually a stretched and Chevy-ized version of the old Holden based Pontiac G8, so we assume it should pack a healthy punch. Rumors have it that the Taurus would come with front wheel drive when equipped with it’s standard engine, but all-wheel drive when equipped with the Taurus SHO engine.
