If you love hot rods, custom cars and classic trucks, then there was no better place to be in Los Angles on June 1st, 2013 than the original Farmers Market at the corner of 3rd and Fairfax. Approximately 100 classic and vintage examples of automotive American iron were in display, and almost anything, spanning five decades, from a 1927 Ford Model T to a 1977 Ford Ranchero could be found parked along the streets bordering the famous and historic Farmers Market.
Among the vehicles on the display this year were several gorgeous Corvette Stingrays, Dodge Challengers, Chevrolet Bel Airs, Packards and a special addition to the show, a beautiful Dual Ghia convertible. One of our favorites, though, was the 1940 Ford Deluxe Sedan Delivery with a custom black paint job with maroon flames across the front fenders.
The powertrain of the ’40 Ford consisted of a Chevy ZZ3 350 ci V-8 backed by a 350 Turbo tranny and a Ford 9-inch rear end with 3.25 gears. The front suspension was an “old school” 4-inch dropped straight axle with disc brakes and wishbone suspension. Wheels all-around were customs by Eric Vaughn. And the sweet ride featured a disappearing license plate that the owner created.
The Gilmore Heritage Auto Show is a casual affair with no admission charge, and it offers visitors a chance to wander among the cars, while taking advantage of the superb eateries and eclectic shopping of the Farmers Market at the same time. It’s a perfect place to have a car show and spend an afternoon.
Best of all, the Gilmore Adobe grounds, which was part of the Gilmore family (of Gilmore gasoline, racing and stadium fame) home for nearly a century in Los Angeles, was open to the public. Inside the garage (which was roped off, but visible) were two of the Gilmore race cars and a collection of garage memorabilia. One of the original Gilmore midget cars was parked outside the garage along with a number of the other show cars.
