As fuel companies increase gas prices with the same enthusiasm that we have towards driving our musclecars on a regular basis, the need for better fuel economy is sometimes offset by a decrease in performance. We can change gearing for better economy, but we lose that off-the-line thrill. EFI conversions provide better fuel economy, but the cost of those conversions put a pretty sizable dent in our budget. However, there is one company that has engineered spark plug technology which they say will give you better fuel economy – and also an increase in horsepower and torque.

The secret to the Pulse Plug’s incredible power lies in the PCI Capacitor inside the plugs, which takes the energy from ignition coil and multiplies it literally thousands of times before firing.
Pulstar’s Pulse Plugs create 20,000 times more energy than a conventional spark plug. What does that mean to your engine? It means better combustion – which translates into more horsepower and better gas mileage for your muscle car. Over the years, we’ve seen spark plugs change from time to time, but in the end, the general makeup of those “new and improved” spark plugs were all designed with the same components. They simply used different metals for the electrode, but those spark plugs didn’t increase the energy inside the plug.
Pulstar’s Pulse Plugs use new technology that they call Precision Combustion Ignition (PCI) which increases the energy inside the spark plug giving a higher capacity discharge that can be seen. PCI technology was not initially designed for the combustion engine; it is based on plasma research developed by the Sandia National Laboratories. But this research was found to have a significant effect when integrated into spark plugs.
Electrical energy that is built up by the ignition coil gets stored inside the Pulse Plug’s built in capacitor. When this energy is released by the PCI circuit it is converted into nearly 1,000,000 watts of electrical power. Compare that to a conventional spark plug’s 50 watt output – Pulse Plugs literally provide 20,000 times more energy to ignite the combustion chamber.
When the spark is not able to ignite all of the fuel in the combustion chamber, unburnt fuel is sent out of the exhaust, which affects fuel economy because of the incomplete burn inside the cylinders. When all of that fuel is ignited, a more complete burn initiates more force inside the cylinder, thus creating more power from each stroke of the combustion process, and that helps to increase fuel economy.
Looking at the image above, you can see that the one key ingredient is the Capacitive Element, which stores up this extra energy. A capacitor stores power until that power is needed, and one way to increase power and economy is to get that complete burn. And depending on your application, whether normally aspirated or boosted, Pulstar offers their Pulse Plugs in different heat ratings. So if you’re running a turbo and need a cooler plug, you’re not left out in the cold.
