If you’re on the up-and-up with your Dodges, you know there’s a new Dodge Caravan R/T, characterized as the “Man Van” with 283 horsepower. But you may be surprised to learn that it’s not the world’s fastest Caravan. That distinction is reserved for this ‘89 Caravan.
Before the term “Soccer Mom” was devised, this ’89 Caravan was used as the quintessential family hauler. But when Oregon resident Terry Ryan put his name on the title for $150, he converted it to a serious hauler. Starting with a basic 2.5-liter four cylinder, he turbo’d it, tweaked it, and installed a three-inch exhaust system. Right off the bat, Terry turned 15.11. With slicks and some practice, he turned 12.91 @ 104 mph.
Today, the Caravan is capable of 11.76 @ 115 with “lots o’ headroom left” for improvement! Best of all is that it’s for sale for the super-affordable price of $6500. While Chrysler’s famous 5/50 warranty has now expired, the K-car-based Dodge continues to chug along and maintain its distinction of being the world’s fastest Caravan.
